Taylor Mickle Bio

Taylor currently lives in Palm Springs, California. She previously moved from the Hudson Valley (NY) and grew up in Manhattan (NYC). She received a Masters in Digital Photography from the School of Visual Arts (NYC) and a Masters in Strategic Technologies from Marlboro College (VT) as well as a Bachelor’s degree in visual arts from Hunter College (NYC). Taylor’s interest in photography started at a very young age and she continues to push the boundaries of experimental, conceptual and figurative fine art photography. Taylor works with miniature figurines creating dioramas, creates unique panoramas that she manipulates into circular forms, and composites people with plastic animal heads. Taylor teaches photography at the Desert Art Center in downtown Palm Springs. She owns her own gallery at the Backstreet Art District (Palm Springs), Taylor Mickle Photography. She recently had a piece (“Modernism Mashup”) at a group show at Barba Contemporary Art in Palm Springs. Taylor has shown at Morris Art Museum (NJ), La Luz de Jesus Gallery (LA), culture & commerce (Hudson, NY), and a variety of other venues. She was the feature cover artist for Chronogram Magazine (Hudson Valley, NY) and has produced four self-published photography books.

Small Worlds & Mashups: Incorporating math, nature, landscape, and human perception, Small Worlds allows me to skew and wrap the landscape into a circle that gives a sense of miniaturizing and humanizing the vastness of place and space at the ground level.

Miniatures & Staged Scenes: Inspired by model railroad train layouts, boomer toys and the TV show, Land of the Giants, I use scale & real models, figurines, toys and natural materials to create vignettes that encourage the viewer to look at the miniature world more closely. I enjoy solving artistic puzzles and create photographs with humor, odd juxtapositions and scales with a sense of playfulness. There is a hint of surrealism in some of my work that allows the viewer to do a double-take. I plan to continue playing with toys, sugary sweets and salty, crunchy foods in my work.
